DIY Terrarium; Simple Quick Info How-To !

Assalamu'alaikum w.b.t dear akhi and ukhti,
brothers and sisters, fellow friends near and far =)

Today I thought I wanna share on my DIY Terrarium.
My new found passion ever since I started off my 'Leafy Green' area in my house a couple of months ago.

To me, Terrarium is so practical to have it in your house. Especially when you dont have your own backyard or balcony of some sort to grow plants.

The ingredients looks simple, but to be finding it might take some effort.
Any nursery selling potted plants should be able to provide you.

What you need :

a) 1 unit of glass bowl of any shape you desire.
** Make sure the glass bowl able to sustain the content inside, easy to maintain/ if you wanna add more plants later. You could also recycle any glass bottles or container that you think suitable for this.

b) Mix Gravel (small + big stones) or shells to be placed at the bottom of glass
** Good for drainage (water flows from top to bottom) just like how water filter works. Drainage layers help ensure excess water doesnt stay in the soil and cause the roots to rot.

c) Activated charcoal enough to cover the gravel at the bottom of glass.
**  Charcoal is an important element in a terrarium because it helps remove toxins and odors. If you don't have charcoal, you can still make a terrarium, but you'll need to to take extra steps to ensure your plants remain healthy and that the environment inside your terrarium remains clean and odor-free (unpleasant odor is a common problem in closed/indoor terrarium)
** You may also look for activated charcoal at the aquarium shop =)

d) Dried barks or plants or mosses that completely cover the charcoal layer
** This will act as a screen layer that keeps the soil (which you will put later) from clogging the drainage layers

e) 1-3 inches of potting soil.
** After putting the soil, make sure you spray the soil with water until it is wet/moist but not water-logged.Never use beach soil as it contains a contaminants that could compromise your terrarium.

f) Some Living moss which you have collected or bought earlier
** Place the moss on top of the soil, pressing it down gently so it come in contact with your potting soil. Place it where ever you like in the glass bottle. Make sure when you take/buy the mosses are moist and in green colour. Not brownish or pale green. It has to be really green (mcm warna rumpai laut)

g) May add some decorations /figurines/ other living plants that can work well with the moss
** Make sure what ever you put in the glass container works and blends well together with the moss. You dont want to see some dead plants in it right?
Cactus/ ferns / Air plant is best choice in the terrarium.

TADA ! You just completed your Mission !!

Look at my Terrarium named ' Mama-Earth' coz she has a few plants in it. =)
If you see on the left it was the first after I set up the terrarium, then after a week (on right) it starts to grow another.
Yeay !!! It shows that this is working!

So why wait, get the materials and start the project !!!

Beautiful isnt it? Glass jars/ containers like this will cost a bit, but if you are in tight budget look for recycle glass. Different glass will have different portion of materials..so play 1:1 ratio.

HAVE FUN TERRARIUM-ING haha !

P/s maybe after this I will share how-to terrarium care =)
